SURRENDING A PET

Intake forms, rehoming, & other resources

Pets Adopted from TARA

If you adopted a dog or cat from TARA and are no longer able to keep them, please email us with information and to make an appointment for returning your pet.

If the pet that you need to surrender was adopted from another shelter or rescue group, contact that organization first to see if you can return the pet.

Pet Surrender Forms

We receive numerous intake requests every week and, unfortunately, due to space constraints we’re unable to help with many of them. If you have found a dog or cat that you need to rehome; or need to rehome your own dog or cat, please submit a Dog or Cat Intake Form. We will review your intake form and let you know if we can help or have other suggestions to help that pet. NOTE: TARA does not have the resources to take in animals for temporary foster placement. Please read below for other resources as well.

Pet Surrender & Rehoming Resources

Rescues & Shelters

We’ve compiled a list of local shelters and rescue groups who may be able to help with a pet being surrendered.  If the pet is a purebred, or close, there are also many breed specific rescue groups and you can find them by doing a search online.

Rehoming

Reach out to friends, family and coworkers to see if you can find someone you know or someone within your network who may be able to adopt the pet.  Use social media, Nextdoor app, or other means available to help network with people you have a connection with.

For the safety of the pet, please refrain from giving them away for free, especially to someone you don’t know. People have been known to search Craigslist or other local sites for small animals to be used as bait for fighting, food for other animals, or for scientific research. Charging a small adoption fee, asking for references and a veterinary contact, and doing a home visit can all reduce the chances that the pet will end up in harm’s way.

Please make sure the pet is spayed/neutered before leaving your care. There are  affordable veterinary care clinics that provide spay/neuters, vaccines and other services.
